Black Barbershop Health Initiative scheduled for Saturday in Evansville

The Black Barbershop Health Initiative, a statewide effort, is coming to Evansville this Saturday. This annual event offers free health screenings and education on chronic diseases to the community. Black barbershops play a vital role in the health of Black men as they often serve as a therapy center and a place of healing.

The strong relationship between Black men and their barbers is built on trust, making barbershops an ideal setting for providing health screenings and education to encourage Black men to seek preventative medical care. Statistics from the Indiana Department of Health show that Black men have the highest mortality rate of any group in Indiana, and prostate cancer is more prevalent among Black men in Indiana than any other racial or ethnic group.

Recognizing the importance of addressing these health disparities, the initiative aims to provide accessible health resources to the community. The event will take place from 9 a.m. to 3 p.m. at seven participating locations in Evansville, including Fila’s Designs, Jerald’s Barbershop, The Dapper Man’s Parlor, Lynch’s House of Coiffure, Going Forward Barber & Beauty Shop, Super Fresh, and Chinnos. This initiative is an important opportunity for Black men in the community to prioritize their health and well-being.
