Local track and field teams aim for state championships this weekend

The South Carolina High School League track and field season is back in full swing, with the state championship meets set to take place this weekend in Columbia. Aiken High has been dominating the championship rings in recent years, with both the girls and boys teams extending their region championship winning streaks. Eliza King, a standout athlete from Aiken High, is poised to become a four-time state champion in the javelin throw after winning the Upper State title and setting a new state record last year. Other Aiken athletes, such as Sandi King, Scotlynn Staley, and Malasia Jamison, have also qualified for the state meet in various events.

On the boys’ side, Aiken High will have Carson Colmer, Cam’ron Frazier, Adam Fundak, and a 4×800 relay team competing. Midland Valley has a strong showing with Torion Whiteisde and Morgan Coverson-Springs as top athletes. Coverson-Springs, a two-time Region Female Athlete of the Year, is the Upper State champion in both hurdles races, and Whiteisde is the Region Male Athlete of the Year. Other Midland Valley qualifiers include Dominic Morgan, Kamari Curtis, and Diosleydis Gutierrez, along with the girls’ 4×100 relay team.

North Augusta will be represented by Ryan Flowers in the 400-meter dash, while South Aiken has multiple entrants in different events, including Zach Whitson in the pole vault and Braylon Bussey in the 110 hurdles. Kameron Reece
