On Sunday night, the four suspects accused of carrying out a violent attack on the Crocus concert hall on the outskirts of Moscow appeared in court. The alleged perpetrators of one of Russia’s largest massacres in a quarter of a century were brought before the Moscow Basmanni district court for the first time. The attackers, facing terrorism charges and possible life imprisonment, will remain in custody for the time being. Most of the court session was held behind closed doors to protect the families of the victims.

While there are some connections between the assailants and Ukraine, authorities have not confirmed a link between the suspects and Islamic State, an Islamist terrorist group that claimed responsibility for the attack. At least 137 people were killed and over 140 injured in the assault. All four suspects are Tajik nationals who resided in Russia.

Muhammadsobir Fayzov, one of the suspects presented in court, was brought in on a wheelchair and unable to speak or open his eyes. Shamsidin Fariduni was visibly beaten and interrogated upon arrest while Rachabalizoda Saidakrami Murodal confessed his guilt in court. Dalerjon Mirzoev showed signs of injuries that were more severe than initially reported.

The suspects provided details on their involvement in the attack, including being contacted by unknown individuals to carry out mass murder for financial gain. There is evidence that they faced severe treatment and torture as leaked videos and photographs circulate online.

Authorities have also raised concerns about involvement from mercenaries from Russian group Wagner and potential Ukrainian support in crossing border. The investigation into this deadly attack on concert hall remains ongoing as authorities continue to uncover more information about this horrific crime.
