The U.S. maintained a two-goal lead with seven minutes left in the second period thanks to a goal by Hutson, assisted by Vansaghi and Skahan. Canada responded before the end of the period with a power play goal by McKenna, making it a 3-2 game.
Early in the third period, Kempf made a crucial save on a back-door attempt by Canada’s captain, keeping the U.S. within one goal. McKenna scored again to tie the game at 3-3 with just over nine minutes remaining. Canada then scored two quick goals on a major power play to take a 5-3 lead.
The U.S. managed to pull within one goal with a goal from Zeimer with just over four minutes left in the third. McKenna sealed the win for Canada with an empty-net goal in the final seconds, leaving the U.S struggling to keep up.
Hutson was named Team USA’s player of the game, while Hagens was named the tournament’s Most Valuable Player and Directorate Award for Best Forward respectively . Both players were also named to the Media All-Star Team and although they outshot Canada 35-25 and scored one goal on four power play opportunities, their efforts were not enough to secure victory against their strong opponents in this highly competitive matchup
