FDA Approves AI Stethoscope Technology Capable of Detecting Heart Failure

Heart failure is a major health concern, with over 11 million people worldwide suffering from the condition. In the United States alone, more than 6 million people are affected. A recent study published in the journal of the American Medical Association noted that heart failure with reduced ejection fraction is a common condition characterized by a weak heart pump.

To quickly detect signs of heart failure in just seconds, a new FDA-cleared artificial intelligence technology developed by Mayo Clinic and Eko Health has been introduced. This AI-enhanced stethoscope undergoes an AI transformation, allowing doctors to listen to the sounds of the heart and lungs more accurately and efficiently than ever before.

The stethoscope has been in use since 1816 and remains an essential tool for diagnosing various conditions. However, additional tests such as CT or MRI scans are often required for a definitive diagnosis. Electrocardiograms (ECGs) are also commonly used by physicians for further evaluation. Lindsey Theis of Scripps News spoke with Connor Landgraf, CEO of Eko Health, who emphasized the importance of utilizing technology like AI to enhance patient care, especially in the early detection of illnesses.

Through a collaborative effort between Mayo Clinic and Eko Health, the AI program was trained using over 100,000 patient recordings to interpret heart activity accurately. The technology is able to quickly assess an individual’s heart strength within a fraction of time, detecting early signs of heart failure with low ejection fraction that are often challenging to identify. Dr. Paul Friedman, a cardiac electrophysiologist and cardiologist at the Mayo Clinic, stressed the significance of early detection for this potentially life-threatening condition.

The cost of the AI-enhanced stethoscope is $429 along with a monthly subscription fee. As AI technology continues to revolutionize healthcare, new opportunities arise to improve patient outcomes and enhance diagnosis and treatment options.

In summary, heart failure affects millions worldwide and can be life-threatening if not detected early on. A new FDA-cleared artificial intelligence technology developed by Mayo Clinic and Eko Health has transformed traditional stethoscopes into AI-enhanced devices that can detect signs of heart failure in just seconds.

Doctors utilize these devices to listen to the sounds of the heart and lungs more accurately than ever before while also reducing diagnostic errors associated with traditional methods.
