Business Students Exchange Goods for the Benefit of Local Charities

Over the past decade, University of La Verne faculty have been leading students on a unique journey through business transactions. Professor of Management Loren Dyck is the latest to join this movement with his innovative course, BUS 551: Seminar in Organization Theory and Behavior.

Dyck’s course challenges MBA students to apply their knowledge of organizational theory and behavior to a real-world scenario. Students are divided into groups of four to five and tasked with bartering a small $1 item for something of greater value within the La Verne community. This project allows students four weeks to hone valuable skills such as negotiation, decision-making analysis, emotional intelligence in the workplace, and enhancing communication within groups.

Over time, the project has evolved to include an added element of civic engagement. Students now donate their final item to a local charitable organization as part of their bartering process. This modification highlights the students’ commitment to community involvement while also providing an opportunity to apply course concepts and theories beyond traditional case studies.

As Dyck’s class reaches its tenth year, it is clear that this approach has had a significant impact on students’ learning experiences. Over the years, students have bartered and collected 29 items worth over $8,000 for various local charities. This year alone, they collectively bartered items totaling nearly $300 in value. Items traded included everything from electronics to artwork – all valuable goods that could be put to good use by local organizations in need.

This project is just one example of how University of La Verne faculty are fostering a culture of innovation and social responsibility among their students. To stay up-to-date on all the latest happenings at the university, visit the University of La Verne news page at https://laverne.edu/news/.
