Over 250,000 Belgians have a second job

In 2023, approximately 260,000 people in Belgium have a second job, which accounts for 5.2% of the working population. This is an increase from the 3.8% reported in 2018. Out of these employees, a quarter work part-time, with highly educated individuals and those aged 25 to 49 being more likely to hold a second job.

What’s interesting is that there used to be more men than women with multiple jobs, but this gap has now been closed. Nearly six out of ten additional jobs are performed as self-employed individuals, with popular sectors including human health, education, and wholesale and retail trade.

Part-time work is also prevalent in Belgium, with 26% of salaried employees working part-time. Women are more likely to reduce their working hours to care for children or others, while men cite personal reasons for doing so. The most popular part-time regime for both genders is working four-fifths.
