The Boeing CEO Steps Down Following a Series of Incidents

In a statement made on Monday, Boeing CEO Dave Calhoun announced that he will step down from his position at the end of the year. Calhoun has led the company through several challenges in recent months, including technical issues with its aircraft and delays in deliveries. He will work to stabilize the company and prepare it for the future until a successor is named.

Boeing’s recent troubles have put pressure on the company to improve quality and safety. Other top executives, including a new CEO for the commercial aircraft department and a new chairman, are also leaving. The reasons for these leadership changes are not specified, but Calhoun mentioned in a letter to employees that he and departing Chairman Larry Kellner had been planning this transition for some time.

Calhoun was appointed as CEO in 2020 to restore confidence in Boeing after two fatal plane crashes in 2018 and 2019. The company faced a worldwide flight ban for the 737 MAX following these crashes. Shortly after announcing his departure, Boeing’s stock rose by about 1 percent. Calhoun emphasized the challenges that Boeing is facing and urged transparency and humility in addressing them. He stated that his work at Boeing will only be complete when necessary tasks have been accomplished to ensure the company’s success.
