The United States U-17 team is set to face Germany in the round of 16 of the U-17 World Cup, with a chance to reach the quarterfinals for only the second time in 18 years. In their last appearance in the quarterfinals, in 2017, the US team was led by future senior players Timothy Weah, Josh Sargent and Sergiño Dest and made a deep run until they were defeated by England. This time around, Gonzalo Segares’ team features Liverpool youngster Keylor Figueroa, Charlotte forward Nimfasha Berchimas (three goals so far) and San Jose Earthquakes midfielder Cruz Medina.

The US U-17 team has only reached the semifinals once before, back in 1999 when Landon Donovan, DaMarcus Beasley and Kyle Beckerman were among the up-and-coming stars. Meanwhile, Germany has had a successful tournament so far, winning all three of their group stage games against Mexico, New Zealand and Venezuela.
