World Autism Awareness Day falls on April 2nd

To celebrate differences and promote acceptance, people around the world are recognizing World Autism Awareness Day. Autism is a developmental condition that can affect a person’s ability to communicate and socialize. The spectrum of autism ranges from mild to severe, with one out of 36 children in the United States being diagnosed with the condition.

A local non-profit in Yuma is working to support those affected by autism in the community. Their efforts include incorporating members into the community, assisting with job searches, and participating in Special Olympics events. Francisco Medel, Residential Manager at Our Choice Human Services in Yuma, emphasized the importance of including individuals with autism in community activities.

One way to show support for autism awareness is by wearing the color blue, which symbolizes calmness and acceptance. Additionally, you can make a donation, attend an awareness event, or offer support to someone you know who is affected by autism. By coming together and recognizing the unique qualities of individuals with autism, we can promote acceptance and celebrate diversity.
