IPN to Join NASA Mission with Experimental Ship in Stratosphere

In a historic collaboration with NASA, the National Polytechnic Institute (IPN) is set to participate in a suborbital mission to the stratosphere with its experimental module Emidds-6. The mission, scheduled for the end of December and January, marks the first time IPN will be involved in such an endeavor.

Led by Mario Alberto Mendoza B├írcenas, a researcher at the Aerospace Development Center (CDA) of IPN, the mission aims to develop instrumentation to identify contaminants such as microplastics in the stratosphere and capture images related to altitude during the platform’s ascent. The unique atmospheric circulation pattern over Antarctica allows for a constant altitude for a longer period, enabling IPN’s module Emidss-6 to collect and store data characterizing the stratospheric environment in low latitudes using Mexican aerospace technology.

The Emidss-6 payload underwent strict technical and electromagnetic compatibility evaluations by NASA experts in July to ensure it meets standards. The team consists of experts from IPN as well as other institutions such as the Institutes of Applied Sciences and Technology and Engineering at the National Autonomous University of Mexico, Western Institute of Technology and Higher Studies, and Molina Center for Energy and Environment.
