Could the Chiefs Leave? Stadium Vote in Missouri Decides the Future of the Team’s Home

Will the Chiefs secure a victory in Tuesday’s stadium renovation vote?

Jackson County, Missouri voters will decide today whether to extend a sales tax to fund a renovated football stadium and a new baseball stadium. The polling is tight, with the Chiefs making it clear that if they don’t get their way, they may consider leaving Kansas City.

If the Chiefs were to leave Kansas City, some fans of the team may not be too worried about it. They might assume that the team would easily find another venue in the area. However, history has shown that teams do not hesitate to uproot and move to a new state if they don’t get what they want. The Dallas Texans became the Kansas City Chiefs in the 1960s when they moved from Texas to Missouri.

Cities are often willing to offer what a team’s current hometown cannot. For example, the Colts moved from Baltimore to Indianapolis in 1984, while the Browns moved from Cleveland to Baltimore in 1996. More recently, the Raiders left Oakland for Las Vegas because they couldn’t get what they wanted in their current city.

Stadium politics can be harsh, and if a team’s current city is unwilling to meet their demands, another city will gladly swoop in. If Kansas City refuses to meet the Chiefs’ requests, they may look elsewhere for a new home. The first step in this process is for voters to decide whether or not they are willing to give them what they want by extending a sales tax for stadium funding.
