The Cubs are calling up Matt Mervis and Hayden Wesneski, as announced by beat reporter Tommy Birch on Tuesday morning. While no corresponding moves have been made yet, there is speculation that Ian Happ may be one of them.
Happ left Friday’s game against the Marlins due to hamstring tightness, and the Marlins went on to win 6-3. As a result, the series was split 4-game series. This call-up is likely due to Happ’s absence from the game.
Mervis is returning to the North Side after a short stint last summer that included 97 at-bats. He has continued his strong performance in Iowa this year, slashing .288/.402/.606 with five home runs. His impressive performance at three different levels in 2022 earned him the team’s Minor League Player of the Year award.
Wesneski was recently called up for a day last week and threw four scoreless innings in relief against the Diamondbacks. The Cubs are set to host the struggling Astros for a three-game series starting at 6:40 p.m. on Tuesday.
