Iona Prep Students Win Division Awards at Regeneron Science Fair

Two outstanding students from Iona Prep recently received recognition at the 2024 Regeneron Westchester Science & Engineering Fair. Senior Aydan Gerber and junior Mateo Del Rio Lanse were awarded for their exceptional work in the competition, which featured over 700 high school students from Westchester, Putnam, and Sullivan Counties. The event took place on March 16th at Somers High School, with an awards ceremony held on Thursday.

Senior Aydan Gerber received a Division Award in Behavioral Science for his project that used Python to conduct keyword-frequency analysis and Latent Dirichlet Allocation to identify significant topics of discussion under the #sustainability hashtag on Twitter. His findings were published by Cambridge University Press in February. Junior Mateo Del Rio Lanse also earned a Division Award at the fair, this time in Computer Science. His project focused on improving machine-learning rates by developing three convolutional neural networks (CNNs) that can screen for tumors in brain scans.

The Regeneron Westchester Science & Engineering Fair (WESEF) aims to inspire students to engage in hands-on scientific research by providing a platform to showcase their work. The top 20 projects from the fair will advance to the Regeneron International Science & Engineering Fair. With their innovative projects and recognition at the fair, Aydan Gerber and Mateo Del Rio Lanse are not only setting an example for others but also contributing to the future of science and technology.

As they stand tall with their Division Awards, these two young scientists demonstrate what it takes to excel in scientific research. They have proven that hard work and dedication can lead to remarkable achievements, inspiring others to pursue careers in science and technology. Their success is a testament to the power of education and innovation, paving the way for a brighter future for all of us.

In conclusion, Aydan Gerber and Mateo Del Rio Lanse are shining examples of what it means to be successful in science and engineering. Their accomplishments at the Regeneron Westchester Science & Engineering Fair are a testament to their talent and determination, highlighting the importance of scientific research in our world today. We congratulate them both on their well-deserved recognition and wish them continued success as they pursue their dreams of making a positive impact on society through science and technology.
