Sources say AAC considering Tim Pernetti, sports executive, for next commissioner

The American Athletic Conference is currently seeking a new commissioner and sources have revealed that Tim Pernetti is being targeted for the position. Pernetti, who has experience in the college sports industry, is poised to take on the role of Mike Aresco, who recently retired after serving as the only commissioner in the conference’s 11-year history.

Pernetti has a strong background in television and has previously worked for ESPN, ABC Sports, and ABC Enhanced TV. He also has professional experience from his time as Chief Business Officer for New York City FC of the MLS.

Recently, the AAC underwent significant changes with the addition of Rice, UTSA, North Texas, FAU, UAB, and Charlotte to the conference. With this growth comes a need for leadership and direction from a new commissioner. Pernetti’s diverse background in television and college sports makes him well-suited for this role.

The trend of non-traditional hires in the commissioner space is evident with Brett Yormark of the Big 12 and Jim Phillips of the ACC. Pernetti’s unique set of skills make him an exciting candidate for this position. With his background in television and his experience as an athletic director at Rutgers, he brings a fresh perspective to this role.
