After a five-year hiatus, world-renowned gymnast Dipa Karmakar is once again representing her country as she prepares to compete in the World Gymnastics Championships in Cairo, Egypt from February 15-18. Ms. Deepa, who gained international recognition at the Rio Olympics, is currently based in New Delhi to practice for the upcoming championships. She will depart for Cairo on Monday. Despite suffering from a right leg injury, Padma Shri awardee Dipa remains resolute in her determination to excel on the vaulting table, her sole event at the championships, according to her father, Dulal Karmakar.
Her coach, Vishveshwar Nandi, expressed confidence in her abilities but also expressed concern about her injury. He said, “She has not fully recovered from the surgery on her right leg yet, but I believe she will bring honor to our country with her performance.”
Ms. Deepa earlier shared her dedication to bringing success to India and sought blessings and prayers from everyone. Her career took a setback when she was suspended for three years due to a doping controversy. However, she worked tirelessly to clear her name and prove herself at the world championships. Her goal is to proudly represent India at the championships in Egypt. The Tripura State Gymnastics Association and fellow gymnasts have also wished Ms. Deepa well on her journey ahead of the competition.
