From Sailor to Health Science Professional: USNCC Offers Online Degree Program for Enlisted Personnel

Sailors who are interested in pursuing a career in health science now have the opportunity to apply for an associate degree program at the U.S. Naval Community College (USNCC). The USNCC, which was established in 2019 and reached initial operating capability last fall, is part of a broader effort to enhance enlisted educational offerings within the Navy. The college has partnered with Western Governors University to offer sailors an online degree program in health science that covers various aspects such as health science management, planning, coordination, processes, and protocols.

The importance of medical roles within the fleet was highlighted by Randi Cosentino, President of the USNCC. She emphasized how this expertise is vital for various military specialties and humanitarian missions. The degree program is designed to provide sailors with the necessary skills to pursue careers as Hospital Corpsmen or Health Services Technicians.

Upon completion of their associate degree through the USNCC, sailors have the opportunity to transfer to a four-year institution to obtain their bachelor’s degree using their tuition assistance or GI Bill credits. Western Governors University’s Director of Military Engagement, Julia Gage, highlighted the flexibility and speed at which students can progress through the degree program.

The establishment of the USNCC was part of former Secretary of the Navy Richard Spencer’s “Education for Seapower” campaign aimed at enhancing intellectual advancement within the Navy. The community college launched its first pilot program in January 2021, offering courses in subjects like nuclear field, cyber security, data analytics, English, math and naval ethics. By 2028, the USNCC plans to be fully operational and offer associate degrees in up to 25 different areas of study.
