Using LiDAR and AI, Fujitsu creates digital twin of ocean to support marine conservation efforts

Fujitsu is leading the way in marine conservation efforts with its cutting-edge technology that combines LiDAR and artificial intelligence (AI) to create a digital twin of the ocean. This innovative approach supports carbon neutrality initiatives and biodiversity, making it a unique contribution to broader environmental efforts.

Fujitsu’s technology for creating a digital twin is based on a real-time measurement technique that was originally developed for its Evaluation Support System, in collaboration with the International Gymnasts Federation. The system uses LiDAR technology to scan the ocean from autonomous underwater vehicles, even under challenging conditions like currents and waves. AI is then employed to restore color and contour to underwater subjects, creating high-resolution 3D images.

The result of this technology is precise identification and measurement of targets up to several centimeters, even in murky waters. In a recent field test near Ishigaki Island, Okinawa Prefecture in Japan, Fujitsu collaborated with the National Maritime Research Institute and the National Institute of Maritime, Port, and Aviation Technology to obtain precise 3D data that allowed them to map coral reefs.

In the future, Fujitsu plans to expand its use of this technology beyond mapping coral reefs and into seaweed beds. Seaweed beds play an essential role in absorbing carbon dioxide from the atmosphere, making them crucial for carbon neutrality initiatives. By creating a digital twin of seaweed beds using LiDAR and AI technology, Fujitsu aims to support companies and local governments in estimating carbon storage capacity accurately, implementing conservation measures effectively, cultivating new seaweed beds efficiently, promoting biodiversity in seaweed reefs and contributing significantly towards marine conservation efforts.

Overall, Fujitsu’s innovative approach has enormous potential for marine conservation efforts as well as broader environmental initiatives.
