Darren Waller’s decision to play still uncertain, says Joe Schoen

The future of tight end Darren Waller with the New York Giants in the 2024 season remains uncertain, according to General Manager Joe Schoen. Schoen stated at the league meetings that Waller has not yet decided whether he will retire or continue playing.

This news comes after Waller mentioned earlier in the month that he would be making a decision soon. However, the Giants are giving him the necessary time to make up his mind. The Giants acquired Waller from the Raiders in a trade last year and during the previous season, he made 52 catches for 552 yards and scored one touchdown. However, he missed five games due to a hamstring injury.

Hamstring issues have been a recurring problem for Waller in recent years, which may influence his decision regarding his future on the field. Currently under contract with the Giants through 2026, Waller is set to earn a non-guaranteed salary of $10.525 million for the upcoming 2024 season. With Waller’s uncertain status, the Giants are preparing for various scenarios and will respect his decision, whether it involves retirement or continuing to play in the NFL.
