Millions of browsing data collected in Chrome’s incognito mode to be deleted by Google

In January of this year, Google updated the disclaimer for its Chrome browser’s Incognito mode. The update came after a class action lawsuit was filed against the company in 2020 by Google Chrome users who claimed that the private browsing mode was not as private as it should be. They reported that user activity is tracked even when incognito mode is activated, with the collection of device data and IP addresses.

Following this lawsuit, Google reached an agreement with the complainants in December 2020 to update its disclaimer for Incognito mode. The updated disclaimer now clarifies that websites visited in incognito mode can collect data and track online activity. As part of this agreement, Google has committed to deleting “billions” of improperly collected browsing data from incognito mode. Additionally, Google has pledged to block third-party cookies by default in its browser for the next five years to further enhance user privacy and confidentiality while using Chrome’s Incognito mode.

These updates and agreements aim to address concerns raised by users regarding the privacy and confidentiality of their browsing data while using Chrome’s Incognito mode. Google’s actions demonstrate a commitment to transparency and data protection for its users moving forward.
