A lion at Greenville Zoo succumbs to health problems

This morning, the Greenville Zoo announced the difficult decision to humanely euthanize one of their African Lions, Saied, at the age of 15. The lion had been battling multiple health issues, including degenerative joint disease and a spinal neurological issue. Despite receiving treatment, recent testing revealed that his conditions had worsened significantly, affecting his quality of life.

The zoo staff made the tough call to euthanize him after a discussion about his health status. Saied was part of a pair with his brother Chuma, who joined the Greenville Zoo from the Riverbanks Zoo in Columbia in 2010. Saied was known as the dominant male of the pair and his loss will be felt by both Chuma and the zoo staff.

The zoo is planning a remembrance for Saied and will provide updates on their plans as they develop. Visitors and animal lovers are encouraged to send their thoughts and condolences to the zoo during this difficult time. The Greenville Zoo expressed their sadness over losing such an important member of their community but thanked everyone for their support and understanding during this challenging time. Stay tuned for more information as the zoo continues to honor Saied’s memory. Copyright 2024 WHNS. All rights reserved.
