Newly captured image shows strong magnetic fields surrounding the black hole at the center of the Milky Way

In 2017, scientists working with the Event Horizon Telescope (EHT) made an important discovery regarding the supermassive black hole Sagittarius A* (Sgr A*) at the center of the Milky Way. They found powerful and organized magnetic fields spiraling from the edge of the black hole, a structure that had not been seen before in polarized light.

The research involved a collaboration of over 300 researchers from around the world, who used sophisticated tools and a global network of telescopes to create a virtual Earth-sized telescope, the EHT, to observe Sgr A*. This allowed them to capture detailed images of the black hole’s magnetic fields and structures.

In 2022, scientists released these images at press conferences worldwide and were surprised to find similarities between Sgr A* and the black hole in M87 despite their differences in size and mass. To further investigate these similarities, they studied Sgr A* in polarized light.

This study provides valuable insights into the nature of black holes and suggests that strong magnetic fields may be common to all black holes. While a visible jet was observed at M87, scientists have not yet found one at Sgr A*. The new images indicate that both black holes have strong magnetic fields, which could hint at hidden jets or other structures yet undiscovered by astronomers.
