Hard Knocks: NFL Proposes Expanding Pool of Teams for Preseason Reality Series

The NFL may expand regulations for mandatory participation in preseason “Hard Knocks”

In recent years, the NFL has been considering expanding the pool of teams that can be selected for the preseason series Hard Knocks. Currently, there are certain exemptions in place such as first-year head coaches, teams that have made the playoffs in the last two seasons, and teams that have done Hard Knocks in the past 10 years. However, these rules may soon change as the league office seeks a vote of owners to include new teams in the mix.

If approved, this proposal could lead to a more diverse range of teams being featured on Hard Knocks. Under the new rules, teams with first-year head coaches, those that have done Hard Knocks in the past eight years, and those participating in the in-season version of Hard Knocks would be eligible for selection. The exemption based on playoffs would also be eliminated.

Last year, only four teams were potential candidates for Hard Knocks: Jets, Commanders, Bears, and Saints. Out of these four, only one team (the Jets) ultimately agreed to participate despite not wanting to be featured on the show. This was a first for Hard Knocks as a team selected for the series did not want to participate.

If this proposal passes and becomes a reality, it could become commonplace for teams to decline participation on Hard Knocks. This could lead to some interesting changes in how the show is presented and how it is perceived by fans.

Overall, it remains to be seen how this proposal will play out. But one thing is clear – if passed, it will lead to more diverse and interesting content on Hard Knocks.
