As a supply chain technology fellow with Deloitte Consulting LLP, Wanda Johnson recently presented the findings of the firm’s annual industry survey, conducted in collaboration with MHI, on the adoption of technology in the supply chain. The study involved around 1,500 executives and takes a “human-centric, technology-driven” approach to the topic. According to Johnson, keeping humans involved in the decision-making process is crucial even as technology advances.
The report is now in its 10th year and aimed to address major issues that have emerged over the past decade. Its focus was on helping industry leaders and workers understand how trends are evolving, where the industry is headed, and what the future might hold. Change management was identified as essential for implementing new technologies effectively.
Robotics, automation, and artificial intelligence were identified as key themes in the survey. Generative AI was noted for its potential to enhance human capabilities, facilitate reskilling, and provide valuable data for predicting outcomes and improving decision-making processes. However, Johnson warned about the potential for inaccuracies if not closely monitored.
According to Johnson, it is crucial for planners to carefully review data generated by AI before relying solely on it for recommendations. The human element remains crucial in leveraging technology effectively in the supply chain.
In conclusion, Wanda Johnson emphasizes that while technology can enhance efficiency and productivity in supply chains, it should be used responsibly and with human input to ensure accuracy and effectiveness.
