The largest oil buyer in Russia abandoned Putin

India has been one of the largest buyers of Russian crude oil despite the sanctions imposed on Russia. However, due to transportation and payment issues, Indian refineries are now shifting their purchases to the United States and the Persian Gulf. The shift in purchasing patterns is seen as a response to the challenges faced in importing Russian oil.

Indian companies, including state-owned Bharat Petroleum and Indian Oil, as well as private processor Reliance Industries, have significantly increased their purchases from the United States. This change in purchasing behavior is attributed to logistical challenges and political considerations, as India aims to maintain good relations with Western countries.

Russian exports of petroleum products have decreased, with Indian refiners seeking alternatives to Russian oil. European countries have also continued to import Russian oil products despite the sanctions against Russia. Indian refineries have increased exports of refined petroleum products to Europe using the same Russian barrels in which the oil was imported.

Overall, India’s geopolitical landscape and economic considerations are driving changes in its oil purchasing patterns, with a focus on diversification and maintaining relationships with various global partners.
