Indonesia: Moving Forward with Boldness – Relocating its Capital City Amidst Climate Crisis

Nusantara, a new city on the eastern coast of Borneo, is currently under construction as Indonesia prepares to relocate its capital there. The cost of the project is estimated at $35 billion and it is projected to be completed by 2045. The decision to move the capital stems from the climate crisis, as Jakarta, located on the northwest coast of Java at the mouth of the Ciliwung river, is at risk of sinking due to rising sea levels.

Jakarta, both Indonesia’s capital and largest city, has a population of around 10.6 million people and 30 million in the metropolitan area. However, 40% of the area is currently below sea level due to sinking land caused by natural disasters such as earthquakes and volcanic eruptions.

The Indonesian government plans to move the capital to Nusantara in order to address this issue and ensure that its capital city remains safe for future generations. While completion of the new city is set for 2045, around 6,000 government workers are expected to relocate there in time for the next president’s inauguration in October.

This relocation process highlights not only Indonesia’s commitment to addressing climate change but also its willingness to take bold action in order to ensure a better future for its citizens. Other countries such as Brazil and Nigeria have previously shifted their capitals due similar reasons but Indonesia’s case stands out due to its scale and urgency.
