Iowa Educators Recognized as Finalists for Prestigious Presidential Awards for Mathematics and Science Teaching

Two Iowa educators, Susan Wenger and Brenda Kaufmann, have been named finalists for the prestigious Presidential Awards for Excellence in Mathematics and Science Teaching. Susan Wenger teaches at Valley Elementary School in Elgin and is a finalist for PAEMST Mathematics. Meanwhile, Brenda Kaufmann teaches second grade at North Tama Elementary School in Traer and serves as the district’s STEM coordinator, making her a finalist for PAEMST Science.

The Presidential Awards for Excellence in Mathematics and Science Teaching (PAEMST) is a highly regarded recognition program that honors kindergarten through 12th-grade teachers who excel in science, technology, engineering, mathematics, and/or computer science. Up to 110 teachers are recognized each year, alternating between elementary and secondary educators. Since its inception in 1983, over 5,200 teachers from all 50 states, Department of Defense Education Activity schools, and six U.S. jurisdictions have been honored through this program.

Recipients of the Presidential Awards for Excellence in Mathematics and Science Teaching are chosen based on their exceptional teaching skills, deep subject knowledge, and ability to inspire student success. They serve as role models within their communities and demonstrate the significant impact that educators can have on student achievement. The recipients will receive numerous benefits including a paid trip to Washington D.C., professional development opportunities with the National Science Foundation award worth $10,000 as well as a certificate signed by the President of the United States.

The Iowa Department of Education is eagerly anticipating announcing the winners later this year. The recognition received by Susan Wenger and Brenda Kaufmann through this program serves as a testament to their dedication
