John Hennessy Recognized with National Science Board’s Vannevar Bush Award for Exceptional Contributions in Science and Technology.

John Hennessy, a prominent computer scientist and former president of Stanford University, has been chosen as the recipient of the National Science Board’s 2024 Vannevar Bush Award. The prestigious award recognizes individuals who have made exceptional contributions to science and technology throughout their lives, as stated on the NSB website.

Hennessy is well-known for his groundbreaking work in computer architecture and his commitment to developing the future STEM workforce. Dario Gil, the chair of the Board’s External Engagement Committee and the senior vice president and director of IBM research, expressed excitement over Hennessy being selected for the award this year. He highlighted Hennessy’s research for its positive impacts on the national economy and security.

In a statement released by the NSB, Hennessy expressed his passion for lifelong learning, echoing Vannevar Bush’s belief that science is the new frontier with countless questions waiting to be answered, especially regarding the mysteries of life and the universe.

Currently, Hennessy holds positions as the chairperson of Alphabet Inc., Google’s parent company, and the Shriram Family Director of the Knight-Hennessy Scholars program at Stanford University. The Vannevar Bush Award will be formally presented to him on May 1, 2024, at the National Science Foundation Awards Gala taking place at the Renwick Gallery in Washington, D.C.
