Kansas begins campaign to attract Chiefs across state lines

The Chiefs are considering building a new stadium in Kansas after former Kansas House Speaker Ron Ryckman Jr. led efforts to persuade the team to relocate across the state line. This comes after a failed proposal to fund a renovation of Arrowhead Stadium through an extension of an existing sales tax. The state has allocated 80 percent of sports betting revenue towards attracting professional sports teams, which could reach $10 million by 2025. Additional measures may be considered to use taxpayer money to fund a new stadium. However, the challenge will be to devise a plan that does not require voter approval, as demonstrated by the lack of support for subsidizing sports team owners in recent ballot measures. With the Chiefs’ lease at Arrowhead Stadium expiring after the 2030 season, there is urgency to find a solution that will retain the team in Kansas City.
