Kia EV9 Claims Top Honors as 2024 World Car of the Year and Best Electric Car at New York Auto Show

The Hyundai Group has a strong track record of winning prestigious vehicle awards, especially in the electric vehicle category. In 2024, Toyota made a surprise appearance at the World Car Design of the Year award with the new Prius. Kia also returned to form with the new EV9 winning multiple awards at the World Car of the Year (WCOTY) competition, including the overall title and World Electric Vehicle titles. Meanwhile, Hyundai Ioniq 5 and 6 won WCOTY awards in 2022 and 2023 respectively.

In order to be eligible for entry into the competition, vehicles must have an annual production exceeding 10,000 units, be available in at least two major global markets and priced lower than luxury options in their region. A panel of one hundred automotive journalists from 29 countries tested these vehicles to determine the winners. The EV9 beat out competitors like BYD Seal and Volvo EX30 to win the WCOTY award, while the BMW i5 and Volvo EX30 competed against it in the electric vehicle category.

The Hyundai Ioniq 5 N emerged victorious among performance cars, beating out rivals such as M2 and XM to claim its title. In addition to these categories, there were also winners for world luxury car and world urban car titles: The BMW 5 Series and i5 took home these honors respectively while EX30 won world urban car award.
