Michigan Medicine to transform vacant Kmart headquarters into multi-specialty facility, expanding clinical services and patient access

The University of Michigan Health System has announced plans to purchase vacant land at the former Kmart headquarters in Troy for the construction of a multi-specialty facility. The property, located at 3100 West Big Beaver Road, is expected to be acquired for $4.42 million and will be presented for approval at the University of Michigan Board of Regents meeting.

The 7.8-acre property was previously owned by Forbes/Frankel Troy Ventures LLC. The facility will focus on advanced specialty and diagnostic services, aimed at expanding clinical services and patient access in Oakland County. Michigan Medicine CEO Marschall Runge sees this as a way to establish a presence in southeast Michigan.

The move is part of U-M Health’s effort to establish a broad network of care across the state, allowing more Michigan residents to access their services close to home. President of U-M Health, David Miller, believes that the facility will be a hub for advanced clinical programs like multi-disciplinary cancer care.

U-M Health plans to use this new investment to provide easier access to their world-class care for metro Detroit residents. The headquarters, which has been empty for over 15 years, was set for demolition last fall but U-M Health decided to purchase it instead and transform it into a state-of-the-art medical facility that will benefit the local community.
