Momentum Center Recognized as Hometown Health Hero for Promoting Well-Being in Community

Recently, the Momentum Center received the Hometown Health Hero Award from the Michigan Department of Health and Human Services for their efforts to improve health within the community. This award recognizes individuals and organizations that work tirelessly to enhance the well-being of residents in Michigan. The Director of MDHHS, Elizabeth Hertel, emphasized the significance of acknowledging and celebrating the contributions of healthcare professionals and advocates who positively impact the state.

Located in Grand Haven and Holland, the Momentum Center offers a supportive environment for youth aged 11 and above as well as adults with mental illness, addiction, and disabilities. They provide a range of social and recreational activities, classes, events, and meals that allow members to interact without fear of stigma or stereotypes. The organization’s mission is to create a space where individuals can come together to improve their overall well-being.

Barbara Lee VanHorssen, the director of the Momentum Center, accepted the award in Lansing on behalf of the organization. The Momentum Center was nominated by Cindy Anderson, a resident of Grand Haven. Additionally, the Ottawa County Migrant Health Task Force received an honorable mention for their contributions to promoting health within the community.

This recognition underscores the importance of community-based organizations like the Momentum Center in supporting individuals’ health and well-being in Michigan. Their commitment to creating an inclusive space for people with mental illness, addiction, and disabilities is truly commendable.

The Momentum Center has been providing valuable services to its members since its establishment in 2007. Its dedicated staff works tirelessly to ensure that everyone who walks through its doors feels welcome and supported. Through its programs and activities, they aim to help people improve their physical health while also promoting mental wellness.

In addition to its support services, the center also offers educational opportunities such as workshops on nutrition and stress management. Members can participate in group therapy sessions or one-on-one counseling sessions with trained therapists.

The center also hosts events such as movie nights or game nights that bring members together for fun and socialization.

The Momentum Center is more than just a place for people with mental illness or disabilities – it’s a community where everyone is welcome regardless of their background or circumstances.

As Barbara Lee VanHorssen put it during her acceptance speech: “We are honored by this recognition but we know our work is far from over.” The center will continue to provide valuable services to those in need while also working towards creating a more inclusive society where everyone has access to quality healthcare.
