New Science Director Appointed at Alaska Seafood Cooperative to Drive Research on Sustainable Fishing Practices

The Alaska Seafood Cooperative (AKSC) has appointed Sarah Webster as its new science projects director. Webster, who previously worked as a fisheries scientist for the Alaska Department of Fish & Game and managed the research program for Alaska Pacific University’s Fisheries, Aquatic Science, and Technology Program, brings with her a wealth of experience in Alaska fisheries science.

Webster will be taking over from John Gauvin, who has held the position for nearly 30 years and will be retiring from the role. However, Gauvin will continue to work on some of the science projects already in progress for the cooperative.

The AKSC is a cooperative of the Amendment 80 fleet that fishes for flatfish, Pacific Ocean perch, and Atka mackerel in Alaska. As science projects director, Webster will be responsible for conducting research aimed at modifying fishing practices and gear to help members reduce bycatch and minimize the impact of fishing on marine habitats. She will also work closely with fishery scientists from NOAA and other institutions to ensure that AKSC’s research is up-to-date and relevant to its members.
