New Secretary of AICF Dev Patel to Host Historic World Championship Match Between D Gukesh and Defending Champion Ding Liren

Dev Patel, the newly-elected secretary of the All India Chess Federation (AICF), announced on April 25 that India will bid to host the much-anticipated World Championship clash between teen sensation D Gukesh and defending champion Ding Liren of China this year. The dates and venue for the championship, scheduled for the last quarter of the year, are still being finalized.

Patel expressed openness to discussions with FIDE, the apex chess body, and is confident that India can host the best world championship. He emphasized that his primary goal is to promote chess as a popular sport in the country. With his experience as the youngest AICF secretary and knowledge of player requirements, Patel acknowledges the efforts needed from parents, coaches, and supporters to nurture chess talents like Gukesh. He believes that by hosting the world championship, chess will emerge as the ultimate victor.

Gukesh, 17, earned the title of youngest ever challenger for the world championship by winning the Candidates Tournament in Toronto. He has already shown his talent on a global stage and is looking forward to facing off against Ding Liren in what promises to be an exciting showdown.

Patel was elected to office last month and is determined to elevate chess in India. He plans to contact FIDE about the bid on Friday, mentioning that Gujarat, Tamil Nadu, Telangana, and Andhra Pradesh are potential host states. With Gukesh’s talent and Patel’s vision for chess in India, there’s no doubt that this World Championship will be one for history books.
