Nouvel Catholic and Valley Lutheran claimed very first-round district soccer wins, setting up a third showdown involving the Division four powers.
Nouvel cruised to a 7-1 win more than Montrose, though Valley Lutheran shut out Laker Higher, four-, in very first-round games Thursday. The group will meet in a Division four district semifinal at five p.m. Tuesday at Valley Lutheran.
Lydia Jacobs scored 5 targets in Nouvel’s win, providing her 35 targets in 17 games for the 12-four-1 Panthers. Emilee Rosenberg added two targets, providing her 30 targets for the season.
Valley Lutheran enhanced to 12-two-three with the win more than Laker.
Through the standard season, Nouvel earned a three-1 win more than the Chargers ahead of playing to a 1-1 tie.
In other Saginaw-region soccer playoff games, Heritage fell to Traverse City Central, two-1, and Midland Dow topped Traverse City West, two-1, in Division 1. In Division two, Mount Pleasant shut out Petoskey, 1-.
In Division three, Unionville-Sebewaing edged Birch Run, two-1, with Caro knocking off Marlette, six-two. Bullock Creek claimed a two-1 win more than Gladwin and Alma blanked Clare, 1-, to move on, but Shepherd was eliminated, 7-, by Massive Rapids.
Baseball
- Freeland swept Shepherd, four-1 and ten-, in a non-conference doubleheader Thursday. Luke McLaren won the very first game, permitting a single run and 4 hits, striking out eight in seven innings. Jacob Kowalski led the offense with two hits. Ryan Quackenbush threw 5 shutout innings for the Game two win. Colin Dee and Mason Fleming had two hits every single to lead the 23-ten-1 Falcons.
- Sanford Meridian claimed a pair of non-conference wins, topping Coleman, 17-three and 14-three. In the very first game, Eli Olmstead threw a two-hitter, striking out 4. Ethan Wetzel led the offense with 4 hits and 3 RBIs, with Chase Thurlow and Olmsted adding two hits every single. Robbie Edwards earned the win in the nightcap, permitting two hits in 5 innings.
