Portugal Government expects Lisbon-Madrid High-Speed Rail by 2034

The Portuguese Prime Minister, Luís Montenegro, made two major announcements last night regarding significant transportation investments in Portugal. In an official speech, he announced that the new Lisbon airport will be located on public lands in Alcochete, a decision that had been pending since 1969. The new terminal will be named after Luís de Camões, with the first runway expected to be built in 2030 and the second in 2031. The total investment is expected to exceed 6,105 million euros. This new airport will replace the current Humberto Delgado airport, which is known for its issues with congestion and noise levels.

The second announcement made by the Prime Minister involved accelerating the high-speed rail connection between Lisbon and Madrid, with the goal of completing the project within a decade. This will involve the construction of a third bridge over the Tagus River, allowing travel between the two capitals to be completed in three hours. The Council of Ministers has commissioned Infraestructuras de Portugal to conclude studies for the construction of the bridge and high-speed line. The Portuguese government is seeking to coordinate with Spain and the European Commission for funding.
