The University of Hawaii women’s volleyball team sent off its seniors in style with a thrilling four-set victory over Long Beach State. The game took place on Saturday night at the Stan Sheriff Center in Honolulu, where senior Amber Igiede bid aloha to the home crowd with a season-high 21 kills. Additionally, sophomore Caylen Alexander put away 19 kills off the bench in a 25-23, 25-23, 14-25, 25-17 victory that seemed improbable early on.
The Beach scored the first seven points of the match and led 18-8 before the Rainbow Wahine (21-8, 14-4 Big West) went on a stunning 10-0 run behind the serving of senior Kendra Ham. They eventually took the opening set on an LBSU service error. UH rallied again to take the second set—going on a late 6-2 run—before the Beach (19-9, 13-5) bounced back in the third. The ‘Bows used a 5-0 surge midway through the fourth to make for a winning night as Hawaii honored Igiede, Ham and fellow seniors Riley Wagoner, Kennedi Evans, Talia Edmonds, and Chandler Cowell, a graduate of King Kekaulike High School.
With the win, the Rainbow Wahine earned the No. 2 seed and a bye in the Big West tournament. They will play in a semifinal Friday in Long Beach, Calif.
