Red Sox President Larry Lucchino, Leader of 3 World Series Title Wins, Passes Away at 78

Larry Lucchino, a former team president of the Boston Red Sox during their three World Series titles, passed away at the age of 78 on Tuesday. He first joined the Red Sox when John Henry acquired the team in December 2001 and spent 14 years as the team president.

During his tenure, Lucchino led the Red Sox to seven postseason appearances and won World Series championships in 2004, 2007, and 2013. He elevated the intense rivalry between the Red Sox and New York Yankees, referring to them as the “Evil Empire.” Lucchino is known for his ability to assemble top talent within the organization and his lasting legacy continues to shape the Red Sox today.

Before joining the Red Sox, Lucchino served as team president for Baltimore Orioles and later as president and CEO of San Diego Padres. He played a significant role in designing Oriole Park at Camden Yards and developing Petco Park in San Diego. While in Boston, he oversaw efforts to update and modernize Fenway Park by adding seats on top of Green Monster wall and making various renovations to enhance fan experience.

Lucchino always held The Red Sox organization in high esteem calling it “the top of mountain” for any baseball executive.
