Shrirang Abhyankar, an optimization and grid modeling researcher at Pacific Northwest National Laboratory (PNNL), and former PNNL intern Sichen Jin developed the program, which allows operators to query data and receive instantaneous answers.

ChatGrid is designed to streamline decision-making by providing operators with valuable information about generation capacity, voltage, power flow, and clean energy sources across the grid. It will operate on supercomputers capable of a billion billion computations per second, making it an invaluable tool for grid operators.

The potential impact of ChatGrid is enormous. In the event of a disruption, it could play a key role in restoring power to millions of people efficiently. It could also assist in bringing online various clean energy projects included in the Biden administration’s infrastructure bill. Currently in the testing phase, there is no specific timeline for when ChatGrid will be fully operational.
