Searching for the Perfect Drilling Target: The Curiosity Mars Rover’s Journey to Region C

The team was optimistic for a productive day on Sol 2256, with plans for contact science and drilling on Mars. However, the workspace turned out to be unsuitable for drilling once again, leading them to search for a new drill target. Despite two unsuccessful attempts, the team remained hopeful as they set their sights on a third candidate drill location known as “Region C.”

As part of their plan for Sol 2256, the team collected ChemCam data on targets “Sandy Haven” and “Tarness Haven,” along with a Mastcam multispectral mosaic to assess color variations. The environmental group also monitored the atmosphere with Navcam observations, including a line of sight image and a dust devil movie.

Curiosity then began the drive towards Region C, with planned stops for Mastcam and Navcam imaging to assess the terrain along the way. Once reaching the final parking spot, additional images were taken to determine if drilling at Region C was feasible or if the search for suitable drilling locations would continue.

The team remains optimistic as they navigate through the challenges presented by Mars, hoping that the third time will indeed be the charm. Stay tuned for updates on their progress!
