SMA Solar Technology (ETR:S92) recently released its First Quarter 2024 financial results, reporting revenue of €361.8m, down 1.5% from the same period in 2023. The company’s net income was €28.5m, a decrease of 45% from the previous year, resulting in a profit margin of 7.9%, compared to 14% in 1Q 2023.
Despite these figures, SMA Solar Technology’s shares have been performing well over the past week and are up by an impressive 17%. However, it’s important to note that analyst estimates for revenue and earnings were missed by 16% and 27%, respectively. These results indicate that the quarter was challenging for the company.
Looking ahead, SMA Solar Technology forecasts revenue growth of around 7.2% annually over the next three years, which is slightly lower than the anticipated growth rate for the Semiconductor industry in Germany at around 8.4%. Despite this forecasted growth rate, there are some concerns about investing in this company due to several warning signs that investors should be aware of.
Firstly, SMA Solar Technology has been experiencing declining margins due to higher expenses. This has resulted in earnings per share of €0.82, down from €1.49 in Q1 of last year. Additionally, two other warning signs are particularly concerning: firstly, there has been a decline in demand for solar technology products during recent years; and secondly, there is increased competition from other companies operating within this space who are developing more efficient solar cells with better performance metrics than SMA Solar Technology’s current offerings.
