A new design for the Tower of the Americas grounds is currently under review in San Antonio. The organization behind the project, Hemisfair, is planning to construct a “Sports Court” pavilion in place of the pond at the base of the structure. This project is part of the planned Tower Park at Hemisfair and has philanthropic support for the funding.
In response to feedback from the public about the need for more public recreation spaces, Hemisfair has introduced a new pavilion that will replace the existing pond, which has been in place since 1988 but has been deemed to have a negative impact due to unpleasant odors. While renderings of the project are not yet available, the pavilion will consist of a concrete slab primarily used as a basketball court. It will feature a 28-foot oval roof to provide shade for spectators. The space will also be available for community events and can be rented for such purposes.
