Thousands of people join the army in Russia seeking vengeance for Moscow terrorist attack

Russia has experienced a surge in the number of individuals signing up for military service contracts since the beginning of the year. Over 100,000 people have signed up, with 16,000 joining in just the past 10 days. Many of these candidates have expressed their desire to avenge the victims of terrorism, particularly in response to a recent tragedy in Moscow on March 22.

The Russian Ministry of Defense has stated that the motivation for many candidates to sign contracts is driven by a desire to seek justice for those affected by this event. Under current laws, conscripts cannot be mobilized for combat missions outside the country, so the Russian army is relying on professional soldiers serving on long-term contracts. These soldiers receive rigorous training and are equipped with modern weapons and technology.

In an effort to bolster its military capabilities, Russia has announced plans to establish two additional combined military groups and 30 new units this year. The army has also expanded its existing divisions and brigades. Defense Minister Sergei Shoigu made these announcements with the goal of strengthening Russia’s defense forces.

Tensions have been heightened following a tragic incident at Crocus City Hall theater in Moscow which resulted in many lives lost. Russian officials have accused Western and Ukrainian intelligence of supporting the attackers and have made arrests related to this event. However, specific evidence linking these claims has not been made public yet. IS-K, an affiliate of self-proclaimed Islamic State’s Afghan branch, has claimed responsibility for this attack while Ukraine has denied involvement entirely.

To address evolving security challenges, Russia is encouraging more citizens to join its armed forces as professional soldiers through widespread posters and advertisements promoting military service across cities in Russia
