The Giants’ Quest for an Explosive Receiver: Why Malik Nabers is the Answer to their Offensive Woes

The New York Giants selected Malik Nabers with the No. 6 pick in the NFL draft on Thursday night, hoping that he can provide the explosive receiving threat they have been missing since Odell Beckham Jr. was taken in the first round back in 2014. Nabers is known for his physicality, elite ball skills, and route-running ability after an impressive season at LSU where he caught 89 passes for 1,569 yards and 14 touchdowns.

The Giants had some thought of trading up to select a quarterback with Daniel Jones recovering from ACL surgery and his availability for the start of the season uncertain. However, with Chicago, Washington, and New England all taking quarterbacks with the top three picks, the Giants decided to stick with Nabers. Jones, who will turn 27 soon, has led the team to one playoff berth in 2022 since becoming the starter in 2019 as the No. 6 overall pick.

The Giants struggled offensively last season, finishing with a 6-11 record and missing the playoffs after making it in 2022. With Darius Slayton, Wan’Dale Robinson, Jalin Hyatt, and Isaiah Hodgins already on the roster as part of their receiving group, Nabers will join a formidable offense that has been lacking an explosive receiver since Beckham’s departure from LSU in 2018 when he put up standout numbers consistently during his years from 2014 to 2016 when he was considered one of the best receivers in football.
