In a tragic turn of events, world record holder Kelvin Kiptum, 24, passed away due to a road accident in Kenya. His coach Garvais Hakizimana also lost his life in the same incident. The accident occurred in the Kaptagat area along Elgeyo Marakwet road.
Kiptum was known for his impressive achievements in marathon running, including winning the London Marathon and breaking Eliud Kipchoge’s world record at the Chicago Marathon just last year. He had been scheduled to participate in the Rotterdam Marathon in April of this year.
World Athletics president Seb Coe, Kenyan police commander Peter Mulinge, and former Kenyan Prime Minister all expressed condolences and paid tribute to Kiptum. His death was widely mourned as an incredible loss to the athletic community and the Kenyan nation.
