Israel reacts angrily as UN resolution on Middle East truce passes for the first time

The United Nations Security Council has approved a resolution for an immediate ceasefire in Gaza during Ramadan. This is the first time such a resolution has been approved since the conflict began. The US abstained from vetoing the resolution, which is seen as a significant development.

Israeli Defense Minister Yoav Gallant, during an official visit to the US, emphasized that Israel feels a moral obligation to continue the war as long as there are hostages detained in Gaza. The lack of a decisive victory in Gaza could lead to further conflicts in the region, he warned.

The US expressed disappointment over Israel’s cancellation of the mission to Washington intended to discuss alternatives to a ground operation in Rafah with the Biden administration. Hamas welcomed the UN resolution and reiterated its call for a permanent ceasefire leading to the withdrawal of Israeli forces from Gaza. The group expressed willingness to engage in a process leading to the release of prisoners on both sides.

The UN Secretary-General emphasized the importance of implementing the resolution, stating that failure to do so would be unforgivable. He also condemned Israel’s stop on aid delivery to the north of the Strip. The resolution’s approval signifies a milestone in the ongoing conflict in Gaza and the efforts to bring about peace and stability in the region.
