Unearthed: Ancient Elephant Bones and the Rise and Fall of a Prehistoric Giant

Two school-age boys made a rare discovery in Germany when they found the bones of a prehistoric elephant underground. The bones, which are from about 10 million years ago, belong to the long-tusked Deinotherium elephant, a distant relative of modern elephants. Presented to the public at a museum in Taufkirchen, south of Munich, the bones have been placed in the museum’s collections that include objects from prehistoric times.

The discovery of these ancient bones was made by two brothers who were digging in the daylight near a small Bavarian village. After finding one bone, they continued their excavation and discovered a total of 120 bones. Some of them were badly damaged due to harsh weather conditions over time.

Deinotherium lived during the Miocene period in Europe, Africa, and Asia. The largest specimens weighed 12 tons and were up to four meters tall. Deinotherium had long tusks and teeth suited for eating forest foods such as leaves and shoots. However, it did not adapt to changing climates during the ice ages, leading to its extinction without leaving descendants.
