Plants and animals worldwide are facing challenges due to reasons such as invasive species, pollution, and climate change. These challenges are a result of human activities, but efforts have been made in the last 50 years to address them. Initiatives like those in Gorongosa National Park offer hopeful stories of wildlife recovery, which are crucial for both the wildlife and the surrounding community.
In recent years, various international bodies have focused on biodiversity conservation. The Intergovernmental Panel on Biodiversity and Ecosystem Services (IPBES), the United Nations Biodiversity Conference (COP 15), and the Convention on International Trade in Endangered Species of Wild Fauna and Flora (CITES) are just a few examples of organizations working towards this goal. However, these organizations do not always integrate each country’s individual conservation plans. This raises questions about how they collaborate and the challenges of working as an international community to protect global biodiversity.
As we explore these issues in our final installment of SOS: Save Our Species, we will examine the efforts being made to address these pressing issues. We will also look at how different countries are approaching conservation and what can be done to bring them together in a united effort to protect global biodiversity.
