The United States aims for a Moon-specific time zone

The US government has announced plans to establish a new time zone on the Moon, called Coordinated Lunar Time (LTC), in 2026. This time zone will be created by NASA and will be used to establish extraterrestrial time standards for safety and accuracy during space flights.

Finland currently experiences a three-hour difference from Coordinated Universal Time (UTC) during the summer months and a two-hour difference in winter. This change in time is not only reported on by news agencies such as Reuters, Britannia, the BBC, and Australian science magazine Cosmos but has also been covered by various scientific journals worldwide.

The passage of time in space is slightly different from that on Earth, with each day on the Moon lasting about 58.7 microseconds longer than on Earth. Scientists believe that creating a lunar time zone will enable more accurate calculations for future missions to the Moon and beyond. The European Space Agency (ESA) has also prepared a similar system for space time zones, which is expected to mark a new era in space exploration.

Professor Catherine Heymans, Scottish Astronomer Royal, explains how gravity affects the passage of time differently in different places in the universe. By establishing a lunar time zone, countries and companies can make more precise calculations when it comes to space exploration. The US aims to remain at the forefront of space travel by implementing LTC before its manned mission to the Moon in 2026.
