Uvalde Mayor Unexpectedly Resigns Due to Unspecified Health Concerns

Brett Cross, a father who lost his son in the shooting at Robb Elementary School in Uvalde, Texas, expressed disappointment in Mayor Cody Smith’s resignation. Smith had been elected mayor in November 2022 after the shooting and had run on a platform of helping the city recover. However, Smith announced his resignation effective immediately due to undisclosed health issues.

Mayor Pro-Tem Everardo Zamora will serve as mayor until a new one is elected on November 5th. The Uvalde Police Chief, Daniel Rodriguez, also announced his resignation effective early April. The community has been calling for accountability and justice since the school shooting and a report by the Department of Justice pointed out several failures in the response to the shooting. Another report cleared the police of any wrongdoing which was met with dismay by parents and residents.

The school shooting took place two years ago and next month marks that anniversary. The Uvalde community continues to grapple with the aftermath of the tragedy and the need for accountability and transparency from local leaders and law enforcement. The community demands justice for those affected by this tragedy and wants accountability from those responsible for it.
